Why the NFL chose the weekend of Dec. 4 is unclear, but players can promote a charitable cause of their choice, so long as that charity or cause is approved by the league prior to Week 13. The criteria to be used by the NFL in approving charities are also unknown.

A league spokesman declined to comment to SI, but the report says the NFL could announce the plan later this week.

Several players, including Titans linebacker Avery Williamson, Giants wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Victor Cruz and Colts punter Pat McAfee all wore patriotic cleats Sunday. The NFL will announce later in the week whether any of those players will be fined.

The NFL regularly promotes breast cancer awareness in October with players and coaches wearing pink, though the league fined Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams $5,787 last year for writing “Find the Cure” on his eye black. Williams’ mother died of breast cancer.
