All the same, if history is anything to go by, the Dallas Cowboys should be moderately optimistic about their chances of making a long postseason run.

Dallas’ 31-6 win in Miami over the Dolphins on Sunday improved its record to 3-0, the first time in 11 years the Cowboys have won their first three games. Dallas has previously gone 3-0 five times during Jerry Jones’ ownership and reached the playoffs in four of those occasions, including when they won the Super Bowl in 1992 and 1995.

The Cowboys have made the most of a reasonably easy start to the campaign—they have played three teams with a losing record—but their credentials will be sorely tested over the next two months. That starts with Sunday night, when they take on the Saints in New Orleans.

Drew Brees’ injury might well have derailed the Saints’ postseason hopes, but New Orleans coped well in the first game without its quarterback, winning 33-27 on the road in Seattle.

In his first meaningful start since 2015—the Saints had already locked up the No. 1 seed by the time he started the season finale against the Carolina Panthers last year—Teddy Bridgewater completed 19 of his 27 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns.

“You never want to take the game for granted,” Bridgewater was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. “I think last year what happened, we had the playoff spot locked up. To come into a game like today that has more meaning was one of those games where your emotions are high because the game has meaning and you haven’t experienced this in a long time.”

The Saints’ running game did its job, with Alvin Kamara rushing for 69 yards over 12 carries for one touchdown, but the defense allowed 515 total yards.

New Orleans will have to be much better against the Cowboys, who racked up over 400 yards of offense and at least 30 points for the third consecutive game.

Ezekiel Elliott had his second-straight 100-yard game, rushing for 125 yards over 19 carries, while his replacement, Tony Pollard, rushed for 103 yards over 13 carries.
